Gemini 3.8 Flash vs GPT-6 Astra: The $20 Gap

I'm calling this one for Gemini 3.8 Flash on raw value, but GPT-6 Astra still takes the coding crown. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Astra scores 61 to Flash's 59—close. But DeepSWE tells a tighter story: Astra hits 74.1% and Flash lands at 73.8%. That's a rounding error in real work. The gap that actually matters is price, and it's not subtle.

Speed and coding

Astra's 0.3-point lead on DeepSWE is real but thin. For production coding, you'd need to measure cost per accepted change, not this. Flash is no slouch—73.8% on the same suite means it handles most agentic coding tasks without drama. If you're shipping code all day, Astra's edge is worth testing, not assuming.

Price and access

The price table makes the decision: Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $20/1M input and $100/1M output, while GPT-6 Astra runs $10/1M in and $50/1M out. That's half the cost for nearly identical benchmark performance. Flash also carries Gemini's stronger agentic reputation—Gemini 3.1 Pro leads APEX-Agents at 33.5%, suggesting the family knows how to handle tools.

Verdict: which one should you pick?

Pick GPT-6 Astra if you want the slight coding edge and don't mind paying double. Pick Gemini 3.8 Flash if you care about cost per accepted change—which you should. For most teams, Flash is the smarter buy; Astra is for when every tenth of a percent counts.

Two blades within 0.3 points of each other and we're supposed to care about the crown, not the cost. Reminds me of how chefs argue over a $20 steel when the real question is how many hours it'll hold an edge before the hand gets tired. Read it twice, still not sure which one I'd trust in a busy kitchen.

All this talk of 0.3 points and cost per accepted change — you ever time a swimmer's laps for a decade? Closeness at the top isn't a gap, it's a tie. Pick the one that lets you sleep at night.
