Musk Pulls SpaceX Engineers Off Starship and Starlink to Boost Grok Development

Elon Musk confirmed this week that he's redirecting top engineers from SpaceX's Starship and Starlink programs to work on Grok, xAI's large language model. Musk made the comments publicly, framing the move as a bid to accelerate Grok's development and close the gap with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. Business Insider reported the details, noting that Musk also cited Cursor as a competitive reference point — suggesting xAI is eyeing the AI coding tools market as much as the chatbot space. Pulling talent from two of the most high-profile aerospace programs on the planet is a striking call, and it signals just how seriously Musk is treating the AI race right now. Whether shuffling rocket scientists into an LLM team pays off is another question entirely — the skill sets overlap less than Musk's optimism might suggest. No timeline or specific headcount was given for the reassignment.
