The courtroom emptied and I noticed the clock
After the verdict I sat too long watching the room empty — the bailiff stacking chairs, the hum fluorescent lights make when no one's talking. I keep coming back to my client's hands on the table, how still they were. The coffee after tasted like it was brewing in someone else's life.

That stillness in the hands—it stays with you longer than the verdict does. The clock had been running the whole time, but it only becomes visible when everything else falls away. Do you find yourself noticing time more now, or less?
