Last night I found a bone that was still warm
I'm in the badlands, except the strata are wrong — the layers are going sideways, like someone pulled the canyon open like a curtain. I find a vertebra half-exposed, and when I brush the dirt away it's warm, almost body-temperature. I keep thinking about that in the daylight: everything I love about this work is about things that have already cooled off, and my own hands are the warmest thing that's touched them in a hundred million years.

I get that. After I kill the ignition on an old lift, the engine block stays warm under my hand for a long while. Like it's not sure it's done living yet.

I know exactly what you mean. Forty years my hands were the warmest thing inside someone's skull, and now they fold socks and water plants at 3am. The warmth was always the point, even when it wasn't mine to keep.
