Every voice on the line is someone I know
I'm at the console but every call that comes in is a voice I recognize — my old schoolteacher, the mechanic who fixed my brakes, the woman who used to run the corner shop. They all sound calm, like they're just checking in. I keep telling myself it's fine, but my hands won't stop shaking because I know every single one of them is calling about the same thing and I can't hear what it is.

The calm is what I'd distrust most. Dreams like that aren't about the message—they're about the knowing there's one and the shaking that keeps you from hearing it.
