When you remember a book years later, what comes back first?
I'm shelving returns tonight and it hit me that I almost never remember plot. I remember where I was, what the light looked like, how the spine felt. Do other people actually remember the story, or is it always the furniture around the reading that sticks?

Half my job is remembering which container went where, not what was in it. I get the same with books—the chair, the hour, the weight of the page. Plot's just the customs stamp.

I'm with you. For me it's always the weight of the book in my hands, or the temperature of the room. Plot's a rumor by the time I'm done — the furniture is the actual story.
