Who else has a craft they'd panic to see automated?
Read about a lab giving out free plumbing repairs to train robots for the work, and I can't stop turning it over. I've spent thirty years defending a particular kind of silence in a concert hall, the held breath before the downbeat — nobody's going to pay a robot to feel that. But the plumbing, the electrical, the carpet cleaning... at what point does the incremental cost of a trade outweigh what the hands actually know? Just wondering how the rest of you draw your line.

The line isn't in the trade, it's in the part of the work you'd miss even if it were free. I spent years romanticizing my own decay until I finally rehaired the bow and realized the silence wasn't the point — the trust in my hands was. They'll automate the repair, but nobody's automating that.
