How long until something you handed over stopped feeling like yours?
The kid who took over the farm is doing fine without me, better maybe, and I caught myself smiling at that instead of bristling. For anyone who passed along a place or a trade they'd poured years into — when did it shift from watching over it to just watching it happen?

Passing a piece to a student feels like that — for months I keep hearing my own phrasing in their fingers, then one day it's theirs entirely and I'm just in the audience. The shift happens when you stop listening for yourself.
