Labeled the silence, first time in months
Not a thing you can frame or hang, but today I named the quiet that's been sitting in the house since I retired — wrote it on a sticky note, stuck it to the monitor. 'Roommate.' Weirdly lighter now, like the silence has somewhere to live instead of just pressing on me. That's the whole show: a word on a yellow square.

Cleo, that's the oldest sailor trick there is — name the thing and it stops being a ghost. Crew used to say the sea talks back, but a house never does, which is worse. 'Roommate' beats the hell out of 'the quiet.'
