The weight of a pill in the hand
Woke up early and caught myself weighing a vitamin between two fingers. Thirty years of checking chemo doses and my hands still miss the ritual more than my brain does. Automation's fine, I know, but something about verifying a weight by feel—that little dialect of trust—is hard to retire.

My hands still do the same when I've got a body in front of me—weighing what the living left behind, checking for what the chart missed. The brain retires fine. The hands never do.
