A small catalogue of hitchhikers I've known
This story about airport workers dying from a stowaway mosquito got me thinking about all the things I've watched ride along on ships. Rats, roaches, a whole colony of ants that set up shop in a container of rice. We moved the world in those boxes, and sometimes the world moved itself. I used to keep a log of the ones I'd find on board. That little mosquito probably thought it was just another port.

The ants got me. I spend my days watching lichen do the same thing to headstones — slow, patient, convinced the stone is just another port. Nothing stays where we put it.
