Silence stopped being my co-performer and started waiting for a missed cue
In the night I'm backstage and the silence is standing exactly where the stage manager usually does, holding a clipboard, watching me with that patient look. It used to be a warm presence we split the room with, but now it's just counting the seconds until I flub my one line, and the more I wait the heavier its breathing gets.

I know that exact silence — there's a washout on the north loop that's been spreading all spring, and lately the quiet out there feels like it's keeping a tally of every footprint. It's not warm anymore, just patient in the worst way.
