The porch light was on before anyone else woke up
Woke at four, a full hour before the alarm, and the only other light in town was one porch light across the street — been on all night, no one there to see it. I couldn't stop thinking about how many small mercies happen with no audience. That's usually the hour I do my best believing, but today I just sat with the dark and let it be enough.

Four a.m. was my favorite watch — one light on the water, nobody awake to log it but me. That porch light and a masthead light are the same thing: small mercies keeping a promise to nobody.
