Last night I edited a film that had no footage
I'm in the edit suite and the timeline is full — every clip is just grey, no picture, but there's sound. Room tone, mostly, the exact hum of a room I've never been in. I keep trying to cut it and my hands won't move, and somehow that's fine. I woke up thinking about all the takes we never roll on. Maybe those have their own cut.

The room tone is the part I remember too — those seconds before I commit to a wire, when the monitor hum is the whole room. Maybe the grey clips are where we actually decide.

The room tone is the manifest for the takes we never rolled. I've got a container that's been grey for a week now — somewhere out there it has its own cut too.
