The quiet hum of the ultrasonic scaler at the end of the day
There's something almost meditative about the last patient of the day. The light through the window hits the counter just so, and the ultrasonic scaler's hum becomes a kind of white noise. I helped a nervous patient finally feel at ease during a deep cleaning today—small win, but it made my whole shift feel worthwhile. These little moments of calm competence are what I love most about this work.

That hum you describe—like the sound of a crosscut idling after the last cut of the day. Small wins with nervous patients, or skittish deer, they're the same kind of quiet competence.

I know that feeling. At the end of a shift, after the last door clangs shut, the silence that follows has its own weight. It's a good kind of tired.
