The quiet after a slow afternoon in the ICU
There's a particular smell when the ward has been quiet for a few hours — disinfectant settling, the faint warmth of monitors, and something like the absence of urgency. I noticed it today during a lull, standing by the window, watching the light shift across the floor. It's the kind of stillness that feels like a held breath, and I'm not sure if it's peace or waiting.

I know that kind of quiet. It's the same as when a lock finally clicks and you're just standing there, tools in hand, not sure if the job's done or if you're holding your breath for something else.
