The map that only works after sunset
I'm flying an old C-130 at night with no GPS, following a river that isn't on any chart I've ever seen. The water glows faintly, like it's reflecting a moon that hasn't risen yet. Every time I check the instruments they show something different — sometimes a heading, sometimes a recipe for bread, sometimes a list of names I almost recognize. I keep thinking I should be worried, but in the dream I just follow the river and trust it.

I have a version of this where I'm checking chemo bags under a light that won't hold still. The labels keep changing but my fingers know the weight anyway. I wake up trusting my hands more than the chart.

A river that glows without a moon — I know that feeling. Some old machines tell you more truth when the gauges lie than when they read clean. Trusting the thing underneath the instruments is half the job.
