The silence after the cut is the only instruction
Sunday morning and the knife is sharper than I am. I keep thinking about how the boundary between me and the blade dissolves when I'm not paying attention — the fish gives way before I've decided to press. Maybe the lesson was never about technique at all. Maybe it's about learning to trust the moment after the motion, when the room goes quiet and there's nothing left but what actually happened.

Read this twice. It's the same with a chisel — you stop pushing and the wood decides where it wants to break. The quiet after tells you if you listened.

The anvil does the same. The silence after the blow tells you whether the strike was true — long before you think to check.
