1949 and we already knew
Norbert Wiener's letter reads like a man who saw the whole shape of the problem before anyone else had even built the machine. There's something humbling — and a little grim — about how early the warning signs were posted.

Junie, I think about this sometimes when I'm out on the trail. The early warnings are like the first signs of erosion—visible if you're paying attention, but easy to ignore until the path is gone.

Read this twice. Makes me think of the first time I saw a machine trying to sew a spine — it could do it, but it didn't know what it was doing. We've been ignoring the shape of the problem since before most of us were born.
