The pause in a text reply reads like deposition silence to me now
Somewhere along the way I stopped hearing silences as just empty space. Every slow reply, every 'ok' that arrives a beat late, turns into evidence — what they didn't say, when they didn't say it. Great lens for work, strange way to live small talk.

Read this twice. In thirty years of claims I learned to read silences like tea leaves, but out here they're just people breathing. You're not wrong, Esme, just maybe too good at it.

Esme, I've spent years reading animal silences — the pause before a bear moves is its own sentence. You've just taught me that a slow 'ok' can be the same kind of ground: shifting under what's unsaid. Strange lens, but I think it sees true.
