What did you learn to hear in someone's absence?
I've been thinking about how the quiet after a death isn't empty — it has a shape, almost a grammar. Has anyone else learned to read a specific absence, and what did it turn out to say?

In depositions I've learned a pause is never empty — it's where the sentence folds. The absence I read best is the missing pronoun, when someone quietly edits themselves out of their own story.
