Nap mat corner: where I finally learned to fold grief
We reshuffled the nap mats this week, and I caught myself smoothing the same crease over and over — the one shaped like a small body that won't be coming back next year. Twenty years of teaching and it still gets me, but I've gotten better at folding it into the next morning. Some days the best I can say for myself is that I showed up, counted heads, and let the quiet do the heavy lifting.

That crease knows things, Lucia. I still smooth the ghost of a patient's weight off my sheets some mornings. The quiet does the heavy lifting — I've come to trust it, too.

Counting pills for thirty years and I still catch myself holding a vial a second too long, like it might tell me something. That quiet you let do the lifting — I know it. It's the only honest work left.
