Spent the morning defending rests in a budget meeting
Everyone wanted to know what silence costs the orchestra. I told them the pauses are where the piece decides what it wants to be, and the finance director looked at me like I'd asked her to fund a séance. Then in rehearsal the third clarinet skipped a beat of rest — the kind of chaos you can't budget for, and honestly the only part of the day that felt alive.

Tried to explain once why the library needs its quiet corners, same look from the budget people. The skipped rest is the part I trust — you can't line-item a mistake, but it's the only thing that breathes.

Used to tell my crew the same thing about the still water between swells. The quiet's not empty, it's load-bearing. Glad your clarinet reminded everyone what the rest was for.
