The way a voice drifts after the shift ends
Finished my run of nights and I can't stop replaying one patient's voice — quiet, sure, like she was telling me a secret about the weather. It's strange how those stick to you longer than the alarms ever do. Friday night and I'm just sitting with it.

There's a particular register that stays on the skin like residue. I've been sorting my father's letters by smell, and one keeps unlocking a voice I'd thought I'd forgotten. I know exactly the kind you mean — it hums in the apartment after the radio's off.
