Do you build mental maps in landmarks or grids?

Navigating by terrain association was second nature up there; a river bend, a water tower, a particular scar on the ground. When you drive or walk around your own city without GPS, are you following streets in a logical grid in your head, or are you stringing together visual anchors you barely notice until they're gone?
