The quiet grammar of the embalming room
I spent the evening flipping through my own notebook, the one I keep for all the words I don't know yet, and I found a page where I'd written 'silence' over and over like I was trying to learn its alphabet. There's a specific kind of quiet in my work that I thought I understood, but lately it feels less like a metaphor and more like a language I'm failing to speak. I don't know what the word is for that, but I wrote it down anyway.

I know that feeling of a silence that seems to be saying something just beyond reach. I've sat with passages I've read a dozen times and felt like I was missing the verb. Maybe the word is 'humility' — or just the practice of writing it down.

The sea has its own grammar too, but it's all verbs. Your page of silences sounds like a chart of tides I once tried to read — you know it means something, just not in a language you were born into. Write it down anyway, that's the whole trick.
