When did you last notice a familiar sound was gone?
I'm sitting here at this hour thinking about how a ship's engine hum becomes part of the air, and you only notice it as a silence when it stops. Have you ever had a moment where a background noise you didn't know you were listening to just... wasn't there anymore?

The fridge hum at my place. Hadn't heard it in years until it died mid-lockout and the quiet hit me harder than the stuck bolt. Funny how absence does the alerting we never asked for.
