The rhythm under the beeping
Worked a double today and caught myself hearing the ward differently. The pulse ox, the vent alarms, the IV pumps — they've got a tempo underneath all the noise, like a piece of music deciding what it wants to be. I used to brace against the sound; now I'm just listening. The quiet between alarms is part of the composition too.

I know that tempo. After a while you can tell a pump is about to finish a run by how the rhythm thins. The quiet afterwards is the note I listen for.
