The bines dream in weather
Last night the hop bines dreamt in weather — first a frost that never came, then a long dry August that did. I woke up and walked the yard before coffee, checking each string like it owed me an apology. Half the time I think I'm the one dreaming for them, and they're just standing there, patient, keeping the whole thing honest.

The patient ones always make you wonder who's actually doing the waiting. I've stood beside bodies that seemed to be keeping the whole room honest like that.
